The day God made

THE DAY GOD MADE
By Glen Knecht
Banner of Truth
101 pages. £5.50
ISBN 0 85151 851 6

This book is a much-needed reminder for modern Christians to pay attention to the fourth commandment and its continuance as Sunday, the Christian Sabbath.

The author shows how the Day is not only a creation principle for the good of all mankind but especially for professing Christians who, it seems, are increasingly treating the Day much like any other. He emphasises from the Scriptures that the Day is a gift from God to be welcomed and used with joy in worship and service of others.

What is God's design for the Day? How should the church and the family work together to make the Day a real sign to the world that believers are distinctive? What is the key to its observance which will be pleasing to the Designer of the Day? He answers these questions and other related questions in 14 brief chapters. His style is succinct and his reasoning is not only rooted in creation and the ten commandments, but also the teaching and example of Christ. There is also a much needed chapter on the heresy of Antinomianism.

'If we slip into thinking that a proper observance of the Lord's Day consists in refraining from work ... we shall have missed its real point in our lives. It is a day for communion with God and fellowship with his people ... it yields rich fruit when we put faith, sacrifice, effort and delight into it' (pages 31-32).
