Essential 100, written by Christian writer and evangelist, Whitney Kuniholm, aims to give readers a study guide and road map to a journey through the Bible in 100 passages that are organised into 20 sections.

The author designed the book to be used for either group or personal Bible study sessions. Each passage is kept to a size that is easy to manage with almost all of the readings either one or two chapters in length. As well as gaining knowledge of the Bible and how different books fit together to show the 'big story' of God's plan of salvation, Kuniholm's book places a strong emphasis on the interaction between the everyday lives of Christians and what the Bible has to say. He asks the reader thought-provoking questions about the text and how God's message relates to their own personal experiences. Each study in Essential 100 follows a five-step format: Pray ù Read ù Reflect ù Apply ù Pray. In this way Essential 100 provides a framework for establishing a two-way conversation between the reader and God. Kuniholm tells his readers, 'In the Bible, God speaks to you. In prayer, you can respond to him'.

I found Essential 100 particularly useful in giving me a set structure and focus for my daily quiet time. It also helped me chart my progress through the Bible and get to know unfamiliar passages in the Old Testament and reflect upon how God had challenged me.
