How do you deal with discouragement?
You could hold a pity-party and share together all your sorrows with invited guests, or you could turn to the Psalms with Sinclair Ferguson, where you will find in his latest book a careful exegesis of a number of the psalms of lament, namely, Psalms 13, 23, 42, 51, 73, 102, some of 119 and 131. The author believes that more and more people struggle spiritually, and that the psalmists are our 'brothers in affliction'.
This well-presented layout includes the NIV text and then a clear analysis of each psalm.
Sinclair Ferguson, a Scot, is Professor of Systematic Theology at Westminster Theological Seminary, Philadelphia. In this collection of expositions, he explores the issues of feeling that we've been abandoned by God, so we are left feeling isolated and directionless. By identifying with the Old Testament song-writers we are able to find how they came through their troubles, and thus how we may find a way through for ourselves.
Now and again he uses an illustration from his days in Scotland, and sometimes he has contemporary stories, but many of his quotations are from the Puritans. Often, however, one aspect of a psalm is illustrated from other biblical material especially the narrative sections.
This book will be of benefit to all who go through periods of discouragement, but it will also assist preachers to break open these various psalms. What is so helpful is the way in which the application of Scripture not only analyses one's difficulties but also contains the cure. Thus we feel that God's Word has not only understood us, but also provided us with solutions to our inner struggles.

Cranleigh
