SACRED JOURNEY (CD)
An evening with Graham Kendrick
Fierce! Distribution. £10.00

This album is a collection of live recordings from Graham Kendrick's recent Cathedral Tour. The programme includes many of his 'greatest hits' but also some less well known material from his early solo albums.

The atmosphere of the album is stately and once or twice Kendrick is heard indicating that any applause should be directed to the Lord. Listening to this music is enjoyable and encouraging. Particularly it is good to hear again some of the gospel narrative songs from Paid On The Nail, a ground-breaking recording in its time.

Those who accompany congregational singing and have good musical ability could well learn from many of the tracks presented here. It is good to hear what the composer sets as a proper pace for 'Meekness and Majesty', and slower-than-usual versions of 'Servant King' and 'Shine, Jesus Shine'.

The backing band is very gifted, but there are one or two unnecessary flutes and at one point a wild sax solo, which seems to have escaped from the background music of an early episode of A Touch of Frost, raised a smile in this listener. It is a lovely collection of Christian songs, and it is very up-lifting to hear not only the composer, but a cathedral full of people singing God's praise with feeling.
