More space in the OT is devoted to the life of King David than to any other individual.
This is a warmly written account of David's life which draws out the spiritual lessons of Israel's greatest king. Short, bite-sized chapters with intriguing single word titles ('Called', 'Fighter', 'Fugitive', etc.) invite the reader to engage with David's life as a life-giving Word. Each chapter is divided into two parts: 'Listening to the story' and 'Learning from the story'. The author has listened carefully and recreates the biblical narratives vividly. He has also learned and the second part of each chapter contains a wealth of practical ways in which we can profit from David as an example to follow or avoid.
The application is always judicious, pastorally wise and connected with real life. Young Christians in particular would benefit from it. In spite of these strengths, I was left with a question. When the crowds saw Jesus heal a demon-possessed deaf mute man, they asked: 'Is not this the Son of David?' (Matthew 12.23, AV).
