Daughters of Islam

Understanding Muslim women

DAUGHTERS OF ISLAM
By Miriam Adeney
IVP. 224 pages. £8.99

Muslim women make up one-tenth of the world population today. They are often given a distorted view of Christian women and what they believe, and sadly many Christians are just as confused and mistaken in their understanding of Moslem women.

As a worldwide religion spanning a large number of world cultures, Islam, like Christianity, inevitably includes a wide spectrum of followers from rich and poor, educated and illiterate, city and rural. As our two worlds mix increasingly, we need a better understanding to bridge the cultural and religious gulf which separates us. Paul tackled this in his world. Can we do less?

Miriam Adeney is concerned to broaden our knowledge beyond our common stereotypes of Moslem women. She interviews 15 women from such countries as Egypt, Iran, Indonesia, and Africa. They come from a variety of backgrounds: some are highly educated, running their own businesses, others struggle in poverty. All of them have had the courage and faith to turn from Islam and choose to follow Jesus Christ but it has been a costly decision. One chapter explores the Moslem woman in her family relationships as daughter, wife and mother. Their clearly defined role in the home can sometimes give them more autonomy and respect than some Christian women get. Another chapter focuses on different ways to present the Christian message in other cultures - by story, teaching, memorising, singing, body language, debate and picture language. Miriam adds a practical chapter on ways of empowering the poor to escape from the poverty trap to independence.

This is a thought-provoking and valuable guide for all who are concerned to see the good news of Jesus Christ taken to this large number of unreached people in today's world - and that should be the concern of every believer.

Churches wanting to help their congregations build bridges to other faiths can contact Interserve or Barnabas Fund for workshops and training. Church members, like missionaries, need help crossing cultural barriers.
