LETTERS TO A STUDENT
By Donald J. Drew
Christian Focus. 192 pages

Having always been a little wary of books addressed directly to 'students' (one starts to tire of the 'student' label after only a term at university), I was deeply encouraged by Drew's concern for Christian students to take seriously the problems and issues that face us today.
Here, Donald has written letters from an older friend to a student, encouraging him to stay close to Christ during his time at university. He addresses many of the issues which confront the Christian student: friendships, temptation, Christian Unions, the authority of Scripture, postmodernism and evangelism, to name but a few.
Donald's perspective and outlook is delightfully refreshing and frank. He doesn't seek to belittle the issues, nor pretend to cover a subject exhaustively; rather, he touches briefly on each subject, offering sound biblical advice and common sense. The letters seek to whet one's appetite for greater depth of study while still providing much food for thought. A list of recommended books is helpfully included.
Drew challenges the Christian student's often impersonal approach to evangelism (particularly a danger within Christian Unions) and encourages us to truly love our non-Christian friends and to take every opportunity to point them to the Lord Jesus, not only through our words but also through the sharing of our lives. He also challenges our attitude to work, reiterating that we should be serving the Lord wholeheartedly through our degree courses - a timely reminder.
The letters on prayer and the Bible are rich in content, and possibly the most inspiring and heart-warming of the whole book. I came away desiring to seek the Lord more earnestly and diligently in prayer, and realising afresh the wonderful privilege of constant access to the Word of God - 'my most treasured possession'.
The letters overflow with warmth and love - indeed, Donald's attitude in itself is a challenge and inspiration. Very readable and enjoyable.
