ON THE TRAIL OF JOHN WESLEY
By J. Keith Cheetham
Luath Press Ltd. 208 pages. £7.99
ISBN 1 84282 023 0

As the title perhaps suggests this is not so much a biography of John Wesley as a guidebook for those who wish to retrace the very same physical paths he himself travelled. Each chapter explores a particular territory - e.g. Scotland, Georgia, Ireland - and in a very light-hearted style chronicles the churches and other Wesleyan heritage sites that may be of interest to Christian 'amateur historians'.

Clearly this work is a subject close to the author's heart. Mr. Cheetham represents the Methodist church on the 'Churches Tourism Association', and at times there is a tendency for the text to lose sight of Wesley and to stray instead into general Methodist history and trivia. As with a guidebook, the author assumes that the reader is actually 'on location' with book in hand and it is not easily read otherwise.

However, one thing that a book of this sort will always bring out is the reality of Wesley as a person - his energy, zeal and self-discipline. In this, the tercentenary year of his birth, it is surely a blessing to be able to travel to any region of this country and still be able to see such a multitude of evidences for the great work of God wrought through the man John Wesley.
