SURPRISE PACKAGE:
When God wrecks our plans

It has been a privilege to read this book.
In Surprise Package Steve Crowter shares the story of his family following the arrival of their third child, Heidi, who has Down's Syndrome. The book is well written, easy to read and provides a valuable insight into the wide range of emotions experienced by families in this situation.
The author, on behalf of himself and his wife, writes with honesty and openness, describing their initial feelings and reactions and how they progressed through the difficult first few months when their baby was severely ill and undergoing cardiac surgery. The way the book is written with an underlying sense of humour informs the reader of the nature of Heidi's challenges but also endears the reader to her as a remarkable individual.
Surprise Package is an important book for all believers to read, including those of us in the medical and allied professions, to better understand and more sensitively support families in this situation. Those in pastoral ministry would also gain from this book and the insight it gives to the challenges facing families having a child with special needs.
The Crowter family have been very brave in sharing their story and in doing so have served the church in being so honest and open. They tackle the issues of why God allowed them to have a baby with such needs in a way which is helpful and glorifying to God.
I do hope that they will feel able in the years to come to update this book as Heidi grows older.
