Now on the staff of Phnom Penh Bible College, Sokreaksa tells his life story from the time he was an 11-year-old on that dreadful day in April 1975 when his country Cambodia fell to the Khmer Rouge.
The moving account - of relocation with his family into the jungle villages, the brainwashing into murderous amorality of his fellow teenagers, the horror of witnessing the execution of his own family and his subsequent escape from the mass grave in which he had been left for dead with them - is written in graphic though never indulgent style.
As the story of remarkable providences and significant meetings gathers pace we are amazed at the grace that enables one so vulnerable to survive in the killing fields and later tell the whole story without bitterness. As in the book of Esther where the name of God is not mentioned we are never in doubt that it is He who is doing a great work.
Only as Sokreaksa is in a refugee camp in Thailand is Christ presented to him and it is not until he starts his new life in Canada that he commits himself to Christ. The period of psychological and emotional healing can then begin and the closing chapters are no less compelling to read as he deals with the problem of forgiveness, post-traumatic stress, suffering and evil. We get glimpses of his journey in biblical understanding and application as he analyses these problems: though few could completely empathise with the pain endured by any who have survived the killing fields, the lessons Sokreaksa has learned are exemplars for those whose suffering is more mundane.
This is autobiography at its God-honouring best - gripping to read and good to give away to a non-Christian friend.
