The Live Sessions
By Jars of Clay
Essential Records (distributed in the UK by Authentic Media)

I really wanted to get excited by this CD, but I was disappointed by the lyrics - God is SO profound, his Word is so mind-blowing, but this doesn't come across and yet I'm sure these guys know this of God too.

Generally the lyrics seem repetitive or just shallow, some good lines, but not expanded and developed (exception 'The Valley Song'). So I was waiting, but nothing really hit me, apart from that these guys are Christians and I can agree mostly with what they're singing - but they don't cut me to the heart or inspire me like I was hoping and like many hymns and songs do (they could learn off Ishmael, for example).

Music-wise, it's just right for a stressed out, ageing (28) bird like me: calming, chilled out - do they call it soft rock?!? - a little Sheryl Crowe, Edie Brickell and Oasis? - mixed with a Spring Harvest worship CD (not that bad). Not as individual, varied, deep or good as these artists can be though, yet they should be better in every way, because they know the wickedest guy on the block. Basically I think a lot of secular artists have more to say about life than a number of Christian artists seem to, sad but true, so why do so many Christians waste their money on this stuff?
