Day One. 390 pages. £11.99

Christians unfamiliar with Spurgeon's works and wondering where to begin could be bewildered by the many volumes that contain his published sermons.

However, Dr. Crosby, in this second volume of daily readings from C.H. Spurgeon, has provided an easy introduction to the treasures stored in those volumes. Anyone would profit from these attractively arranged extracts from the sermons preached during the first six years of Spurgeon's ministry in the Metropolitan Tabernacle.

Each daily reading contains the text, an additional reading, a sermon extract, and additional material for further study and meditation, thus providing several levels of devotions according to how much of the material is used. The volume is completed by a subject index, a Scripture index, and two pages of notes.

Spurgeon was a graphic speaker and almost every extract contains sayings which are quite aphoristic. For example: March 24: 'Think lightly of hell, and you will think lightly of the cross'; April 3: 'There is no hearing the nightingale without night, and there are some promises which only sing to us in trouble'; November 16: 'God is love, but God is also just, as severely just as if he had no love, and yet as intensely loving as if he had no justice.' The book is full of relevant advice, sound doctrine and practical exhortation. These starters may encourage you to order the main course!
