Discovering Christ in Genesis

From the first

DISCOVERING CHRIST IN GENESIS
By Don Fortner
Evangelical Press. 348 pages
ISBN 0 85234 504 6

This book is written in the firm conviction that all Scripture speaks of Christ. Mr. Fortner's approach to the book of Genesis is, therefore, to seek to find types of Christ, and his work of salvation, in the different stories that are recorded in the book.

The book is not, and does not claim to be, a full commentary on Genesis, but rather a book to help the reader to appreciate more fully the wonder of the work of Christ, as illustrated by stories from the book of Genesis.

The book is written in a style which would be accessible to most Christians. The writer seeks to show the sovereignty of God over all events, including salvation. He also displays a strong confidence in the absolute infallibility of Scripture.

There is much in this book which is both encouraging and instructive. I have just a couple of reservations about it. One is that the writer tends to look immediately for the teaching about Christ and his work, without having first shown the primary teaching of a passage. The second reservation is that I wonder whether some of the allusions to Christ that the writer finds are justified by what Genesis says.

Notwithstanding these reservations, I would commend the book to anyone wanting to study the book of Genesis.
