From Despair to Hope

God centred

FROM DESPAIR TO HOPE
By Peter Williams
Day One Publications. 212 pages
ISBN 1 903087 29 5

Peter Williams acts as an experienced travel guide as he points out the highlights of the book of Job.

He writes with the pastor's heart and with clear sympathy with the pain and foibles of our humanity. With refreshing honesty he challenges our depressed spirits and encourages us not to be enticed into the den of morbidity and despair. He is particularly helpful on the subject of death, 'something to be yearned for, not as an escape from the realities of life, but as an entrance into the eternal reality of God's loving presence'.

The main feature of the book is its God-centred perspective. There is not a chapter which fails to point our eyes to the majesty of heaven. His use of illustration and application is a model of true exposition. He deals with such diverse issues as the effect which the media has on our attitudes to death, pornography in the church and materialism. The author's familiarity and love of Reformed theology is clear as he interacts with the message of Job. Allusions and quotes from Dostoyevsky sit easily with excerpts from Whitefield's diary.

There is a noteworthy section on how God speaks to us now. Again, the author is in the historic mainstream Reformed tradition where he sees the validity of dreams and visions within the church today.

Job was not a cerebral scholastic but a man who met with God. Job is not about the conversion of a sinner but it is about the refining of a saint. There are 31 chapters, so use it in your devotions and watch the refining take place. This book deserves the accolade of 'must read'.
