One and only

Beating Time

ONE AND ONLY
By Big Daddy Weave
Fervent Records

This debut project from American band Big Daddy Weave brings us a competent, vibrant brand of acoustic pop rock.

This is the time of year for acoustic pop rock, in my opinion. Nothing quite like the countrified sounds of acoustic guitar and gravelly, powerful voices for a summer's evening. Musically, the CD is almost faultless. Almost.

This is where personal taste comes in: eagerly, I whack the review copy into my CD player, only to be greeted by a wailing sax on track one. Unexpected, perhaps a little 'early 90s'. It's a small point. I'm not a big saxophone fan. But anyway, less about me, more about Big Daddy Weave.

Why, apart from my affinity for the musical genre purveyed by Big Daddy Weave, do I recommend this CD to you? Encouragement! Good old fashioned Bible-based encouragement.

'In Christ' stands out particularly in this category, the lyrics a rock out reminder of the joys and privileges of being, as the book of Romans first put it, united to Christ. The edification of the Christian is not the only focus: songs like 'Being in love with you' and 'Audience of one' bring out heartfelt words of worship reflected in a lifestyle that lives it out.

The final track, 'Rest', is a reminder of the words of the Lord Jesus in Matthew 11.28-30: 'Come to me all you who are weary and burdened...'

Overall, the lyrical content of this album is easily as good as that of the music. It comes out on July 30 and it is definitely worth a listen. If you need a comparison to feel secure in spending money on a CD, try 'Third Day' or 'Train'.

The catch? 'What's this on your car stereo?' asks an innocent youth group member. (Blushes) 'Big Daddy Weave!'
