This is a great book to read. Every chapter is a short biography of a different person and we are told the various struggles each had in coming to peace with God. In these short chapters, we see Ichabod Spencer giving some very good pastoral counsel - which we can benefit from as well.

Read what he says to a person who came to faith in Christ by seeing a vision of a 'bird of Paradise'. What would you say to religious - but unconverted - parents whose little daughter had just died?

Read about a whole lot of people converted through a single tract (you can also read the tract in an appendix). Read of a young woman dying in poverty and pain yet saying: 'My poor body is weak and almost gone; but God fills me with the delights of His love. My heart is full of joy. I am perfectly happy.'

My fear is that many people who would benefit from this book won't read it. The writer's name doesn't help! The fact that it was written 150 years ago might put some off. Then there is a foreword by the publishers which is pretty dull.

However, get past that and I think that almost any Christian reader will get a lot from this book. Indeed, I think many will thank God for these brief sketches.
