Three score years and then?

The gospel for grey hairs

THREE SCORE YEARS AND THEN?
By Rhena Taylor
Monarch Books. 218 pages

The sub-title of this book, 'How to reach older people for Christ', tells us exactly what it is about. There is one helpful chapter of exhortation to older Christians; the rest is a challenge to evangelise senior citizens; about a third of the book being dramatic material for use either by or for the elderly.

The author is the director of Outlook Trust, founded in 1992, whose aim is to encourage gospel work among older people. The rise of such a para-church organisation suggests a perceived neglect in the normal life of local churches.
This reviewer approached the book with a clear conscience, since the church of which he is a member has a monthly Older Friends' Fellowship and both the Women's and Men's Fellowships have a fair proportion of the elderly. However, the author's enthusiasm and arguments made me wonder if we are making the best use of our opportunities. Though some of the abundance of suggestions may seem inappropriate, there are enough of the other sort to make the read useful for elders and others wondering how to reach older people with the gospel. I will pass on my copy to our excellent Older Friends' leader today!
