Authentic Christianity

AUTHENTIC CHRISTIANITY
By Dr. D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones
Banner of Truth. 328 pages
ISBN 0 85151 807 9

Here are 21 evangelistic sermons covering Acts 4.8 - 5.14 preached in 1965/6 with authority, passion and compelling logic. At times the material is dated, but it still rings true for our world and its predicaments 40 years on. What about the following prophetic insight in the light of Bin Laden's exploits: 'The trouble is not the Hitlers and Stalins. If it were, we could deal with the problem. The trouble is the one who governs them, and gives them their devilish cunning and daring, and teaches them their masterstrokes.'

Lloyd-Jones engages with every aspect of human sin and failure. Philosophical theories, scientific rationalism, non-Christian world religions, Roman Catholicism and liberal Protestantism are brought to the bar of Scripture. A welcome antidote to much contemporary preaching that is unwilling to say 'boo' to the most horrendous goose.

There are wise words on the regular and exceptional work of the Holy Spirit (pages 200-202). Word and Spirit must be held in balance but being Spirit-filled is not to be confused with 'letting yourself go' (pages 207-9). On signs and wonders he addresses the question: 'If that is how the church began, why don't things like that take place today?' (pages 315-6).

Some brief snippets: 'It is a hot Sunday night and I shall be here sweating in the pulpit. Why do I do it? I will tell you why ... only one thing can touch the problems of the human race - it is this gospel.' 'Are you searching for the truth or not? If you are out for entertainment then you have come to the wrong place.' 'Conscience said: "It is wrong, you must not do it". But we said: "I will. I like it. I want it. I must have it".' 'He is the only Saviour. Believe in Him for He alone can save your soul.'

A book well worth reading.
