Exodus, Vol. 2: Chapters 19-40

Reliable guide

EXODUS, VOL. 2: Chapters 19-40
By John D. Currid
Evangelical Press. 416 pages. £14.95
ISBN 0 85234 472 4

This second volume of Currid's commentary secures his work, alongside the recent volume by John Mackay, as among the foremost contemporary conservative evangelical works on Exodus.

Thoroughly researched and meticulously argued, it provides exegesis of the highest order, which at no point condones the specious theories of modern Old Testament criticism. Especially helpful in its lexical awareness and its interaction with the historical and archaeological context, there is no more reliable guide to the interpretation of Exodus.

Ultimately, however, it disappoints where the preacher most seeks help. Currid shows little, if any, awareness of recent evangelical hermeneutical studies by the likes of Douglas Stuart and Christopher Wright. Such works have sought to emphasise the authority and integrity of the Old Testament in its own terms and to uncover the theology of narrative and legal texts and to outline a methodology for establishing a link between the ancient text and the modern world. Interaction with these developments in evangelical Old Testament studies is missing and the reader is left with little more than an interpretation that sees certain New Testament truths as illustrated typologically in the text of Exodus. Consequently, the preacher will need to go elsewhere for assistance for more satisfying hints and guidelines to contemporary application.
