Biblical Womanhood: a five-week course

BIBLICAL WOMANHOOD
A five-week course
The Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood & St. Ebbe's Church, Oxford
Course notes. 58 pages. £2.50
Leader's notes. 28 pages. £1.50

The course is prepared and written by Sarah Young, the female student worker at St. Ebbe's Church.

There are two booklets for the course. The first is for each member of the study group where questions are raised, and there is space for writing in the answers. Each session of this is based on specific Bible passages where the questions stimulate the group member to go to the Bible and think through the implications of the passage. This kind of presentation provides the basis for learning in the group discussion. The sessions cover 'Foundations for biblical manhood and womanhood', 'Women and marriage', 'Singleness',' In God's family', and 'Women and relationships'. Occasionally a short book extract on the particular topic is included, which helps thinking further.

The second booklet is the Leader's Notes, which cover the passages and issues of each session. The aims of the course are explained and how it works, saying also: 'The course assumes a certain level of spiritual maturity, as well as an acceptance of the Bible's authority in all areas of life and doctrine.' The latter is particularly important to bear in mind. I found these notes most helpful in picking up and discussing for the leader in preparation for the group.

In a day when women's roles inside and outside the church are confused and argued over, this group of studies is enlightening and helpful. They have been used with student groups and deserve a wider audience in other women's groups.
