How to pray for your unbelieving husband

Sexist prayer?

HOW TO PRAY FOR YOUR UNBELIEVING HUSBAND
By Michael & Diane Fanstone
Monarch. 128 pages. £5.99
ISBN 1 85424 378 0

How to pray for your unbelieving husband contains 120 readings, reflections and prayers. It also includes practical suggestions to point your partner to Christ.

This small volume was written primarily to encourage women whose husbands are not Christians. (It could also be used by men trying to point their wives to Christ.) Many issues are raised - conflict in child-raising, priorities in time and money, resentment felt by an unbelieving husband to his wife's commitment to a person they cannot see and a community they cannot be part of, etc., etc. For each day the authors offer a reading, an example for reflection, a starting-point for prayer and an action or thinking point. The goals are to help Christian wives to pray with focus, to offer encouragement and provide relationship-enhancing ideas.

For new Christians who find themselves in this situation, some areas covered and ideas for action are helpful. But the book's patronising title was difficult to overcome. If this book is deemed to be necessary it could be revised to be less sexist.
