Following the Shepherd
By Peter Jeffrey
Evangelical Press of Wales
112 pages. £2.99

There is nothing new in either of these paperbacks. But that may be their attraction. They both state old truths in a refreshingly uncomplicated fashion and are most helpful in applying Scripture to life.
Peter Williams introduces us to some of the lesser known characters of the New Testament. From Sergius Paulus to Timothy, we meet Lydia and Festus, Ananias and Sapphira, Apollos, Epaphras, Demos and that mixed bag Gauis, Demetrius and Diotrophes - 29 people in all! The lucid lessons drawn, either as an example of spiritual growth or warning of spiritual decline and hardness - often so obvious that you wonder why you had not seen them before. The stick or carrot application is direct but never laboured.
It takes skill (and nerve) to offer to guide us on the well-worn path of the most well-known Psalm. Peter Jeffrey lacks neither. His Following the Shepherd is devotional reading at its best. He avoids the common danger of overload on the intricacies of sheep-minding, and concentrates on helping Christ's sheep along the paths of righteousness and through the valley.
No firework displays in either book: just nourishing food for down-to-earth Christians.
