Ransomed, Healed, Restored, Forgiven: Learning from the life of Peter

Rocky's return

RANSOMED, HEALED, RESTORED, FORGIVEN:
Learning from the life of Peter
By Michael Bentley
Evangelical Press. 142 pages
ISBN 085234 456 2

The story of Peter is an amazing one. A simple fisherman in a remote Roman province, we would never expect his name ever to be known outside his own immediate area.

But because he became a follower of Jesus, Peter became one of the most famous men in history. Arguably, though, he also became one of the most misunderstood. The Roman Catholic church is quite unrecognisable as a church at all in New Testament terms; but it claims to be built on Peter. Others, noting the rebuke Paul gave to Peter (Galatians 2.11) assume that there was a life-long difference between the two men, and that they preached different gospels, completely ignoring Galatians 1.9. Michael Bentley's simple little book will go a long way towards dispelling ignorance of the real Peter. By expounding key passages in short chapters, Bentley helps us see both Peter's strengths and weaknesses, and draws useful lessons for us today.

It is a simple little book; but that is not to insult it. There are plenty of books around for the biblically literate, but all too few for those with little knowledge of Scripture; fewer still for those with limited reading skills. This book is one that a pastor could happily give to a young person, a new Christian, or to one who 'doesn't read very much' and be confident that they would benefit from it. While occasionally I do wish the author had been a little less simplistic or a little more rigorous in his exposition, on the whole he succeeds in his aim that we all 'learn what our response to the Lord and his cause should be.'
