MY RIGHTS, MY GOD
By Robin Wells
Monarch. 160 pages. £6.99
ISBN 1 854254 503 1

The truth is there are not many good books to do with 'getting into mission' at present, and so this is especially welcome.

As we might expect from a missionary statesman of the calibre and experience of Robin Wells, this is a notably wise and thoughtful offering. It deals with the 'big issues' - career and calling, cross cultural living, risk and suffering, families and singleness - always in a challenging and compassionate way, and always with a determination to refer to Biblical norms.

Those thinking about mission, as well as missionaries facing early discouragments and doubts, would particularly benefit from it.

The text is supplemented by excellent illustrations and the case studies, as so often, are show stoppers. These are given in the text, but also backed by a CD which presents a number of similar first-hand missionary experiences as well as music and teaching from the great and the good, such as John Stott and George Verwer. This is an attractive extra and makes for good value for money - if that's what you're worried about.

I have a couple of minor worries. The book is rather too short! Complex issues are therefore not allowed to be complex, and something significant may have been lost in the determination to maintain a snappy, punchy style. Also, I am not happy about the title. The whole discussion about 'rights' is currently quite complicated and easily misunderstood, and I fear the title will only confuse people when they need to be clear that the book is well worth buying and reading.
