The Huguenots are little known by most British Christians, so this booklet about the lives of three French Reformed ministers is particularly welcome.
Before Calvin died, there were about 2,000 Protestant congregations in France, many of the pastors having been trained at Geneva. After his death, an epic witness for Christ went on into the 18th century.
In this booklet, we learn about Jean Daille (1594-1669), Claud Brousson (1647-1698) and Antoine Court (1696-1760).
There is a clear outline of the life of each man. The material is edifying, even exciting. Daille was one of five pastors who served a congregation of several thousand at Charenton. Brousson was martyred at Montpellier. His life was written by a little known Presbyterian Puritan called John Quick (1636-1706). The unprinted manuscript is secure in Dr. Williams' Library in London. Even the outline life of Quick is interesting.
The booklet reminds us that our Puritans are matched in spiritual experience by the French Huguenots who shared the same beliefs. If only these 'sons of Calvin' had triumphed (as in Scotland), France would have been a very different country - even today.
